Palazzo dello Spagnolo, on a walking itinerary through the Rione Sanità

Walking itinerary

Naples on Foot from Gloves Rooms

A day-long route you can actually follow as you walk: from the door of the B&B to the Sanità, the old town and the Spanish Quarter.

The city begins right outside the door

The route is long and designed for a full day, with breaks. From the last stop, you can take Metro Line 1 from Toledo back to Museo instead of retracing the whole walk.

Distances and times are approximate. Use an up-to-date map along the way, wear comfortable shoes and bear in mind that Naples has hills, uneven paving and very busy streets.

  1. Start · Gloves Rooms

    Salita Sant'Elia 32

Step out of the B&B and head towards the heart of the Rione Sanità. It's the natural starting point for seeing everyday Naples, not a city built for tourism.

  2. About 5–10 minutes

The Rione Sanità and Palazzo dello Spagnolo

Walk through Borgo dei Vergini and stop in front of the famous open staircase of Palazzo dello Spagnolo. It's worth it for the Baroque architecture and for the constant interplay between the palazzo and the street.

  3. About 10–15 minutes

    National Archaeological Museum

Make your way to the MANN. If you go inside, allow at least two hours; if you'd rather keep walking, take in the area around Piazza Museo and continue towards Piazza Bellini.

  4. About 10 minutes

    The historic centre and Spaccanapoli

Enter the old town from Piazza Bellini. Follow the decumanus past palazzi, churches, craft shops and courtyards: here, the past is still part of everyday life.

  5. About 10 minutes

    San Gregorio Armeno

Walk down the street of the nativity-scene artisans. Continue towards the Duomo or return to Spaccanapoli in the direction of Santa Chiara, depending on how much time you have.

  6. About 20–25 minutes

    Via Toledo

From Gesù Nuovo, continue on to Via Toledo. It's the link between the old town and monumental Naples, bustling at every hour of the day.

  7. About 10 minutes

The Spanish Quarter and the Maradona Mural

Step into the Spanish Quarter and make your way to Largo Maradona. The mural has become a place of collective memory and speaks of the deep bond between the city and the football legend.
